Single parents are struggling more

Right now, across Victoria and other parts of Australia, more families, many of them single-parent households, are quietly struggling with something that should never feel uncertain: having a place to live.

Rent prices have risen sharply in recent years, while wages haven’t kept pace. What was once manageable has become overwhelming. Families are cutting back on essentials, skipping meals, and constantly worrying about how they’ll cover the next rent payment.

Single parents are feeling this pressure most deeply. Even with support, the rising cost of housing is stretching budgets beyond breaking point. This isn’t just about finances; it’s about parents lying awake at night, wondering how to keep a roof over their children’s heads.

Community organisations across Victoria are seeing more people than ever reaching out for help. These aren’t isolated cases. They’re everyday families, working hard, caring for their children, doing their best, yet still being pushed to the edge by a system that isn’t keeping up with reality.

This is no longer a hidden issue. It’s a growing crisis that demands action.

The lack of affordable housing and strong support systems is pushing families to their limits. Many continue to put on a brave face, but the strain runs deep, especially for children. The impact of housing insecurity doesn’t end in the moment; it can shape wellbeing, stability, and opportunity for years to come.

But this is also where community matters.

We can choose to show up, for families, for children, for one another, through practical support, advocacy, and compassion. Because safe, stable housing isn’t a luxury. It’s the foundation for everything else.

And right now, too many Victorian families are carrying more than they should have to.

If you feel you are struggling and you are a single parent, HopeAfresh advises that several organisations across Australia can support you in different ways, including One Parent Victoria, Council for Single Mothers and others
